Who Do You Think You Are?
I really like the show. Emmitt's was more interesting than Sarah Jessica Parker, but I think that's because it seemed to be more of a story or a journey. The upside to the show is that more people watch and become more interested in their family tree. But that is also the downside. Being a paid member of ancestry.com for a couple of years now, when this show comes on, the ancestry sight is much slower. But good for ancestry in getting people interested in their family trees. Obviously it is a lot more work than the show shows. Some records are very easy to find, but others are not. It has taken me two years to get to the point I am and I still don't feel I've even begun. I've only done the basics. Find my ancestors that I can and their kids and when they were born, died, etc. I haven't found very many cool facts out about them or anything like that. Well only a couple I have anyway. I know for a lot of people there are many things that block their search. Adoptions, name changes, family secrets, and other various things. I feel blessed that I actually got to grow up for half of my life with three full sets of great grandparents. They've all passed away now except for two, but a lot of people don't get to know their grandparents, let alone their great grandparents. This made the beginning of my search much easier. Eventually I'd like to get a DNA test done. I think that would be helpful in just tracing family roots even more and connecting with other distant family members. I highly suggest everyone at least trying to find out a little bit about your family tree and where you come from. Even if it's just a little bit, I think it's important to our kids and future generations to know this information and to pass it on. Good luck in your search, and if you need any help, let me know. I'm not an expert, but I've been doing this for long enough to almost know something =) Happy searching!
